Conil
boasts 14km of sandy beaches stretching as far as Cape Trafalgar.
On a clear day the coast of N. Africa is clearly visible. Cycling
has long been popular in this area, away from the coastal motorway
lay a network of quieter roads that wind over hills between the
small unspoilt villages inland. Other
active sports holidays are on the increase in the area, El Palmar
especially is known as one of Europes top surfing locations, the
conditions being better in winter. Conil is more a centre for Kite
Surfing. There
are a variety of golf courses from as close as 17km.
Conil has a working fishing fleet and is renowned for the Red Tuna
caught during the early summer in the system of nets that stretch
out to sea, called the Almadraba. The fertile soil also means there
are a wide variety of fruit and vegetables grown all the year round.
The main tourist season is July and August and Conil is still a
predominately Spanish resort with little English spoken.
Conil
itself serves a population of some 20,000 people, the winter months
are
obviously much quieter than the summer ones, however there are always
things going on with a variety of bars and restaurants open whenever
you visit.
Once
arrived in Conil you don't need a car to get a round as everything
is a short walk from the Conilsol hotel. For non cycling partners,
besides the obvious attraction of the beach, Conil provides a good
base to explore the surrounding towns and villages. There is also
a good local bus service connecting Conil with Cadiz, Sevilla, Jerez
and Tarifa. Day excursions are possible from Tarifa to Tanger in
Morocco.
There
are a good choice of restaurants and bars, serving mainly traditional
fish and meat
dishes. Value for money is still excellent when compared with UK
prices. Most restaurants or ventas offer a 'Menu del Dia'.at
lunch time. Normally three courses with a glass of wine or beer,
and bread included. The traditional places charges around 8.50 euros
to 11.50 euros. Some restaurants offering more elaborate dishes
may charge more, by the same token there are some small ventas in
the countryside that charge less. There are also other types of
restaurants to choose from, including pizzerias etc...
